New York - Patricia Gerbarg, MD and Richard P. Brown, MD will discuss “Complementary and Alternative Mental Health” and their work in Breath~Body~Mind at the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) Annual New York State Education Conference Saturday, November 6, 2010, from 4 to 5:30 pm at the Desmond Hotel and Convention Center, 660 Albany Shaker Road, Albany, New York.

Consumers, healthcare practitioners, social workers, and others will hear doctors Gerbarg and Brown talk about alternative medicine interventions and techniques that complement traditional treatments for psychiatric disorders.  Included will be some Breath~Body~Mind teachings the doctors developed which are a unique fusion of ancient and modern mind-body approaches derived from QiGong, yoga, Christian monks, Coherent Breathing, Open Focus Meditation, and martial arts.

Dr. Gerbarg is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College.  She graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.  In addition to her clinical practice, she provides consultation and facilitates the development of research projects on the health benefits of mind-body practices for recovery from mass disasters such at the September 11th World Trade Center attacks, the southeast Asian tsunami, and military personnel.

Dr. Brown is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York. He gives over 200 medical lectures every year, including full-day courses for the American Psychiatric Association and other professional groups, as well as workshops for non-profits such as Serving Those Who Serve in New York City.   He is a certified teacher of Aikido (4th Dan), Yoga, Qi Gong, and meditation.  His workshops have helped thousands of people deal with everyday stress and enabled survivors of trauma and mass disasters to recover their health and well-being.  

Dr. Gerbarg and Dr. Brown are co-authors of the international award-winning How To Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care (WW Norton) with Dr. Philip Muskin.  They have an Internet site at HaveAHealthyMind.com with mental health information and resources.
